Long ago, there were real creatures bigger than anything we could imagine: dinosaurs! Some were so big they looked like they came out of a story. They had long necks to eat leaves from tall trees and were so heavy that their footsteps shook the ground. These dinosaurs lived in forests and open areas millions of years ago. Even today, their fossils remind us how amazing and powerful they were. Let’s go back in time and learn about five of the largest dinosaurs to ever live!
Argentinosaurus
Argentinosaurus was one of the largest dinosaurslived between 94 and 97 million years ago in Argentina. Argentinosaurus could grow to almost 100 feet in length, that is, almost 100 feet long and weighed about 70 tons. It used its long neck to eat high-level trees. Only a few bones were found; It is believed to have been so large that few animals would attack it.
Patagotitan
Patagotitans lived in Argentina about 101 million years ago. It was one of the largest land animals ever, measuring nearly 120 feet (37 meters) long and weighing 70 tons. The fossils are among the most complete of any giant dinosaur, helping scientists figure out its size. Like all other large herbivores, it probably spent its time eating trees and plants. Its size made it almost untouchable by predators.
Dreadnoughtus
Dreadnoughtus lived in Argentina about 77 million years ago. The creature was about 85 feet, almost 26 meters long and weighed about 65 tons. It literally means ‘fear nothing’, which is completely natural because it was gigantic. The fossils were quite well preserved, which really helped scientists figure out how big it really was. It used a very long neck to eat plants because it was probably too big and slow to be a concern to its predators.
Supersaurus
Supersaurus lived in North America about 150 million years ago. It could stretch from about 105-110 feet to about 32-34 meters and was one of the tall dinosaurs. It is lighter than other species, weighing only about 35-40 tons, but its long neck allowed it to reach a significant amount of food stored in trees. Although we never saw complete fossils, it must have been a quiet grass-eater who wasted a lot of time looking for a patch in a forest.
Sauroposeidon
Sauroposeidon existed about 110 million years ago in what is currently the United States. This is one of the tallest dinosaurs, standing about 60 feet tall, or almost 60 feet high at the shoulder. It can grow up to 30 meters in length and weigh 50-60 tons. Its long neck helped feed tall trees. It was probably one of the largest herbivorous mammals that ate plants far above the ground.
